Telco 2degrees has boosted the 5G coverage of its network in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, adding 13 new areas with support for the latest mobile and fixed wireless data access technology.
The telco, which was formed earlier this year through the merger with Vocus NZ under the 2degrees brand uses Ericsson as its 5G technology partner.
The new 5G coverage areas are:
- Milford
- Belmot
- Albert St
- Ellerslie Central
- Wairakei
- Adelaide Rd
- Hyde Park
- Remuera Road
- Broomfield
- Hobson Bay South
- Kohimarama South
- Waimairi
- Mt Wellington North
2degrees chief technology officer Martin Sharrock said that with the 5G upgrades, 4G capacity available in the areas is doubled.
The telco is also offering unlimited 5G fixed wireless broadband service in parts of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Sharrock said that 2degrees has designed its network to provide contiguous 5G coverage that customers stay in for longer, rather than spots that they would go in and out of.
Users of Apple's iPhone 12 and 13 range of smartphones, as well as the iPhone SE 2022, can now use 2degrees' 5G service, the telco said.
For the second quarter of 2022, broadband metrics site Ookla had 2degrees at the top spot in New Zealand with 5G download speeds of 479.71 megabits per second, and 29 millisecond latency.
Vodafone was second with 342.45 Mbps and 30 ms, followed by Spark at 307.21 Mbps and 34 ms latency.
